Sensory Poem: a poem that takes one thing and describes it using each of the five senses; taste, smell, sight, touch, and sound.
Simile: a comparison between two things using 'like' or 'as'
1. The car sped by like a cheetah on the savannah.
2. His tears fell down his face like two twin waterfalls.
3. Toto’s fur was as soft as flower petals and cotton.
Metaphor: language that stresses a relationship between two things, giving one thing the qualities of the other (basically - a 'stronger' simile, not using 'like' or 'as')
1. Her face is a diamond in the crowd.
2. The waves were rampaging elephants on the stormy sea.
3. Water is gold when you live in the desert.
Imagery: descriptive language that 'paints a picture' or speaks to the reader’s senses
1. The room smelled like roasted meat and red spices.
2. Though the hard cement was wet from the winter rain, the air was dry and smelt of old car exhaust.
3. The kitty purred contently while I stroked it’s short, grey fur.
Alliteration: the repetition of sounds in at the beginning of words
1. The scraping steals stole the factory workers’ souls.
2. The owl offered omens of nightly origins.
3. Ivan will eye the ice cream.
Assonance: the repetition of vowel sounds in words
1. The day the slaves were laid to bath in their own sunlight
2. I must confess that in my quest I felt depressed and restless
3. Old age should burn and rave at close of day
Stanza:
